Antique Camphor Wood Campaign Chest with Brass Hardware

$895.00

Gorgeous antique honey-toned camphor chest, dating to the 1800s, when it would have functioned as maritime storage. The aromatic wood is a natural insect repellent, making it ideal for crafting long-lasting storage pieces. Demand for chests like this one was bolstered by 19th century British military campaigns, as English officers found themselves in need of sturdy and reliable luggage that could endure extended periods in tropical climates.

This chest features a rich wood grain and brass hardware, including brass bound reinforced sides, carrying handles, a central lock plate, and a recessed lifting handle. A brass name plate in the center of the lid remains blank and could be personalized with an engraving. Chain lid stays offer additional support to this chest when it is propped open.
