This remarkable chinoiserie end table was designed by the iconic father and son duo Philip and Kelvin LaVerne and constructed from patinated and engraved bronze and pewter, with gold leaf applied by hand. The engraved scene depicts a lively urban setting, with architectural elements, foliage, and figures in traditional Chinese dress engaged in various tasks. The intricate details and dazzling contrast of gold and silver hues make this table a truly eye-catching treasure.
New York based designers Philip and Kelvin LaVerne are renowned for melding fine art with function, with their idiosyncratic style and unique design processes. With Philip studying under Ashcan school painter John Sloan and Kelvin receiving an education at the Parsons School of Design, their work reflects their extensive art historical knowledge, often drawing on Greek, Egyptian, and Chinese art. Their innovative construction techniques allow tables like these to remain in generally good condition, requiring little maintenance, due to their natural patinas. The LaVerne's work remains highly sought after, due to the high degree of precision and artistry it demonstrates.
