Large Mexican Olinalá folk art lacquered wood box. Typical of Olinalá lacquerware, this piece crafted from linaloe wood, which is highly valued for its natural, aromatic scent. 

Decorated in red and black lacquer with intricate carved whimsical animals and florals. Features ornate silver metal hardware. Elaborate metal latch with lock (and key) opens to a spacious wood interior. The natural wood fragrance smells fantastic!

This lacquered chest is the work of Damaso Ayala Jimenez, a celebrated Mexican artisan from Olinala, Guerrero He was recognized as a "Grand Master" for his mastery of the traditional 'rayado' (carved) lacquer technique, a skill he passed down to his children after accumulating knowledge through three generations of his family.
