SADANOBU HASEGAWA III Japanese Bunraku Theater Set Act V PUPPET Tissue Woodblock
Hasegawa Sadanobu III (1881–1963), 1920's original Japanese color woodblock print "Bunraku Theater Stage Set for Act V, the Yamazaki Highway, from the famous play Kanadehon Chushingura or The Treasury of Loyal Retainers". From his series titled The Illustrated Collection of Famous Japanese Puppets of the Osaka Bunrakuza.
As originally issued, this print is complete with its tissue overlay showing the outlines of three puppet characters as they appear on stage.
This scene presents us with a moonlit night along the Yamazaki highway running between Kyoto and Osaka. Robbery and murder will ensue!
The tissue is intact, but shows creases, as photographed, also a stain at the upper right. The print is unstained, shows light wrinkling from moisture.
Print attached to black matte, print measures 14 5/8" x 8 3/4".
