Fort Assiniboine (later known as Fort Assinniboine) was a United States military fort located in present day Montana and constructed in 1879, with the purpose of securing the Canadian border in the midst of settler conflict with Native Americans. Once the largest military post in the US, it is also known for hosting the 10th Cavalry, a post Civil War United States army regiment composed entirely of African American soldiers.
