This lovingly carved white Brahman bull, circa 1890-1910, likely represents Nandi, sacred mount of Shiva, one of the principal Hindu gods. Nandi is not only Shiva's vahana (vehicle or mount) but also his protector and most ardent worshipper. Statues of Nandi are often found guarding temples devoted to Shiva, where those visiting the temple might whisper prayers or wishes into the bull's ear. Nandi's white coat is said to symbolize purity and justice.
While typically depicted in a seated position, here Nandi stands on a rectangular base, prepared to serve Shiva as his vahana.
This statue is solid marble and therefore quite heavy.

This is an antique item that has suffered some damages. There is a dark blemish on the front of the bull's body. Both horns are damaged, one having the tip chipped off completely and the other with a large crack in it. See photos for details.
