Excellent condition, no chips, cracks, or repairs. Shows marks at base.Johnstone (1936-1991) studied with Peter Voulkos at UC Berkeley in the early 1950s. She was at the forefront of a pivotal period in ceramics, when things were evolving from "functional" to more abstract expressionism. Working alongside Peter Voulkos and experiencing a new approach to clay as a material greatly inspired her and is clearly evident in her work. Unfortunately, women in the 1950s did not receive the same attention as men, and Sandra did not receive the recognition she deserved. Johnstone also studied with Paul Soldner. She eventually built her own salt kiln in the early 1980s.
