Antique MARANAO Philippines Large Brass Ornate Scroll BETEL NUT Tobacco Box

Antique Southeast Asian betel nut box crafted by the Maranao people of Mindanao Philippines. This is a larger size box in brass with hinged lid and loop handles at each side. Ornate scrollwork accents each side and lid of the box.

The removable upper brass tray features triangular and geometric pierced jali-work. This design allowed air to circulate to keep the fresh betel tobacco leaves moist while they rested underneath in the main cavity of the box.

The lid has a tendency to stick, but opens with a little tug. Shows obvious wear and patina, typical for age, but overall, excellent condition.
