This fascinating Jizai Kagi, carved wooden carp that was used as a hook/pot lever over a hearth in 19th century Japan has a unique moveable ball in its mouth. Used as a type of architectural element hung over the fire, Jizai Kagi were often a sign of a wealthy household. This Jizai Kagi is special due to its articulated mouth. This level of decorative functionality came from weapon manufacturers that no longer had to make weapons for the war. They turned to artistic expression for everyday tasks.

The carp has a curved tail and a hole through the neck area which was originally used as the conduit for the pot hook. This fish was hand carved in keyaki wood. scattered scratches and some missing paint but nothing structural.

Fish has slight damage, most of which has been restored. These imperfections do not take away from the history and beauty that emanates from these catfish.
