Beautifully woven antique Iroquois basket with lid. Iroquois, who call themselves Haudenosaunee, meaning "People of the Longhouse, are originally from the Northeastern region of North America.

Woven using hand pounded black ash splint and sweetgrass. The inner weave pattern incorporates dyed red and green ash splint bands forming a striking checkerboard border and contrasting visual accent around the base and the matching lid.

While early baskets were crafted primarily for gathering and domestic storage, weaver communities transitioned toward these specialized, smaller "fancy baskets" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to sell or trade as folk art. I would guess this basket is early 20th century.

Measures approximately 7" wide x 2" tall. 

Excellent condition.
