CHINESE Carved Gilt & Red Pierced Wood IMMORTAL with DEER & Crane Wall Art Panel
Chinese Qing Dynasty era carved wood panel. Finely carved in high relief with intricate scene showing a seated Immortal with deer on one side and crane on the opposite. There are also griffins in carving to the left and right above his head.
Shoulao, the Star God of Longevity, is the Chinese immortal associated with deer and cranes. Both animals are powerful symbols of a long and fortunate life in traditional Chinese culture. The deer is linked to longevity because it was believed to be able to find the herb of immortality, while the crane symbolizes immortality, nobility, and immortality.
Gilt finish showing minor wear, revealing red and darker layers underneath.
Measures 11 3/4" x 8 3/4" x 1 1/2"
Excellent condition, no chips, cracks, or major wear. Panel was put on back in order to be hung nicely.
