Antique Chinese Three Tier Red Lacquer Woven Twill Basket With Decorative Checker Weaves Lid

$250.00

Beautiful antique Chinese three tiered stacking wedding basket, woven with bamboo and cane rattan. Beautifully decorative metal fittings and hardware. This basket, traditionally used for carrying dried foods, has a sturdy handle as well as a smaller metal handle that was most likely used to hang the basket at an elevated height. the lid and top two baskets are easily removable, with no latching or locks. The large handle creates the frame for the three baskets, and gets increasingly more decorative as it gets closer to the bottom. There appears to be a stamp of a makers mark on the inside of the overarching handle. It is illegible, but intentional.

The top of the lid is expertly woven to display a phoenix flying over a flower. The side handles have the body of a dragon included in the decoration. Dragons are signifying of wealth and strength for the groom while the phoenix represents the bride and the grace and renewal of life. When found together, the co-existence of two mythical creatures represents happiness, love, and prosperity.

There are some missing nail heads at the base of one side of the handles, this is included in the photos. The lid has a lose bamboo strand that could be easily fixed if needed, but does not take away from the stunning craftmanship of the overall item. Other than normal wear and tear on an antique object, the basket is in great condition.
