Originally born in Tuttlingen, Germany to a long line of cabinetmakers, Hunzinger immigrated to the United States in 1855 and established a successful workshop in New York City. His emphasis on engineering rather than style, as well as his lack of interest in imitating historical designs, set him apart from his contemporaries. A clever and prolific inventor, Hunzinger was awarded 21 furniture patents in his lifetime, including one for a duplex spring mechanism, the label for which can be found on the underside of this rocking chair. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe distinctive chair back is composed of ascending \"lollipop\" spindles, the tallest of which feature lovely carved floral and foliate motifs. The seat cushion has been reupholstered with a rich blue velvet. The original upholstery tacks, though no longer in use, are included with the chair and can be viewed in the final photo.
