Andrew Johnson 1867 Framed Land Grant Signed by Frank Cowan
Framed Land Grant document, President Andrew Johnson, signed by secretary Frank Cowan in 1867. This land grant document is part of the Morrill Act of 1862 where the government sold tracts of land at a very low cost. The funds were then used by the designated state's universities to create or enhance their agricultural education. This particular one was for thestate of Ohio (note – Ohio State University is the land-grant university in Ohio). Note the signature on this document. The newly appointed secretary, Frank Cowan, signed for the president (a common practice)
